Report on January Online Auction and Announcing The Date of February LIVE Auction

Our first auction of the new decade proven to be another success. A beauty it was too with everything you need for the summer season and beyond. As we eased back into the rhythm of work while some of you were still in holidays, we welcomed many registered bidders whose informed bids resulted in a great sell  through rate and a number of Lots going past their High Estimate.

The highest hammer of the auction was the 6 Litre OWC 1996 Antipodean from Matakana which sold for $3625. The second highest was a 1989 Chateau Rayas Chateauneuf du Pape which scored $1175, closely followed by 1990 Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape ($1057.5), Rhone is evidently going strong as always.

We had great value Chardonnays and Pinots for the BBQ as well as some iconic Bordeaux blends and big reds from New Zealand and the world. 2008 Destiny Bay Mystae scored $329, and Stonyridge’s 2017 special label Coeur De Lion achieved $152.75. An absolute crowd pleaser and one of the most renowned brands from the New World, Penfolds Grange’s vintage 2011 was snapped for $470, a great buy; another star in the lineup, 1998 Henschke Hill Of Grace Shiraz in original wooden gift box scored $822.50 with its 1984 vintage achieved $411.25. From the Old World, 1981 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia scored $564, followed by 1978 Giacomo Borgogno Barolo $470. A great value for the price, 1999 Chateau Leoville Barton sold for $152.75.

Vintage Ports and Sauternes are a little unfashionable at the moment, though they offer some real value and are a great way to finish any dinner party. We, at The Wine Auction Room love them. The 1977 Grahams Vintage Port achieved $293.75 , followed by 1977 Taylors Vintage Port but the highlight in the port section had to be the 1970 Cockburns. Fervoured bidding resulted in a sale at $340.75 with both vendor and bidder very happy.

As ever, we love hearing from you and we always enjoy seeing you in our sale room (virtual and physical). Our February auction will be a LIVE/online sale on Tuesday 11th February at Caro’s Wine on 14 Mackelvie Street, Grey Lynn. The auction will commence at 6.30pm. As always, our auction will be streamed live on auctions.wineauctionroom.com. We have got some great wines lined up for this auction and will have something special to taste that evening too.

As today is the Lunar New Year’s Eve, marking the transition from the Year of the Pig to the Year of the Rat, our best wishes for a happy and prosperous year ahead. Enjoy a relaxing long weekend and see you all in February.

Thanks to all who participated in this auction and we look forward to seeing you again.
