Our Wine Journal

Our musings about the notable and newsworthy.

Every day we meet great people and extraordinary product.

From time to time we reflect these experiences in our Wine Journal to share with you. In doing so, we hope to develop a library of useful information that can benefit anyone who wishes to explore the mystical world of wine with us.

by ROTH SOCIETY & MIKE DESIMONE To view and behold good art, you don’t have to limit yourself by only visiting a museum. There are a lot to be discovered at your wine shop in your area or even in your wine cabinets or cellar. If...

Having 515 lots in total, our March Rare & Fine Wine online auction attracted many registered bidders who helped us to create some new records; for that, we are very proud and grateful.   The highest successful bid was the 2000 Armand Rousseau Chambertin Grand Cru, which sold...

February is a traditionally strong auction month and this year was no different. Our February Live auction (the first for the new decade) was extremely successful with 90% of our Lots selling – making both our vendors and bidders very happy indeed. ⬆️Feb Live Auction venue & wines...

Written by  Mark Orton   When Pinot Noir was first planted in Central Otago, there’s a very good chance that no-one was giving much thought about garnering the attention of Burgundy.   Just getting the vines to take and making palatable wines was a good start; but as anyone...

By October 23, 2019   The Sauternes 50 index – a notoriously slow market mover – has risen 4.6% over the past three years. The broader Bordeaux 500 index has gone up 12.6% over the same period. So far this year, Bordeaux’s fortunes have been mixed. Within its sub-indices, the Right Bank 50 has dipped the most (-3.1%), closely followed by the Sauternes 50 (-2.5%). None of the Sauternes 50 constituent wines have made gains in the past year. As the chart below shows, Climens has fallen the most (-8.0%), while Suduiraut the least (-1.8%). Yquem, which recently released its 2017 vintage, has also dipped 7.3%. The Sauternes story is not one of investment potential – especially when compared to the development of the broader market. But the sweet wines of Bordeaux continue to hold an allure to buyers, promising great quality (supported by broad critical acclaim) and representing the most affordable entry point into the fine wine market. And with the festive season upon us these honeyed treasures of Bordeaux are guaranteed to delight.

All bidders must be at least 18 years old to participate in our auctions.
